How To Fit A Door Knocker

Useful Guide To Replace A Door Knocker On Your Front Door

The door knocker is a beautiful and traditional piece of hardware that can really add a statement piece to your external door. We live in the days of video door bells remotely advising you of who is at the door, but they cannot complete the design of your front entrance to really add the all important kerb-appeal to your home.

More Handles sells a great range of Door Knockers in many styles and finishes to get the perfect match for your front door.  Here we give you the ultimate guide to how to fit a door knocker to your front door.

1 - Establish what kind of door you have.  Metal doors and some composite doors are not suitable for face-fix door knockers as the doors are hollow inside and the fixings have no purchase.  These type of doors require a bolt-through fixing method.

Timber doors and other solid construction doors are suitable for both face-fix and bolt-through door knockers.

2 - Door Knockers will be supplied with the correct fixings for either face-fix or bolt through, and sometimes with a separate strike plate.

Bolt-Through.  Supplied with M6 bolts that require a hole to be drilled through the door.  A decorate bolt head often domed and in a matching finish, secures the bolt on the side of the door.  Other decorative bolt covers can al so be purchased to hide the bolts.

3 - Always drill pilot holes before completing the face fix application.  A neat solution as there are no visible bolts on the inside of the door.

4 - The M6 bolts will be a standard size to suit a 44mm thick door.  If you have a different thickness of door you may require longer bolts or to cut the standard ones.

This should be job for the basic DIYer, and with just a few minutes work you can have a real statement door knocker shining like new on your door.
