From The Anvil and Wenlock Range - Guide To All Finishes

Since the company's inception, From the Anvil have always been Market leaders in creating excellent new products, beautiful new finishes, and looking into the architectural past to innovatively combine the classic beauty of olden-days ironmongery today's modern hardware-requirements - From the Anvil's ethos is reinventing our architctural heritage to meet modern living standards.

Their new collection of finishes is no exception - Focussing on the raw, rich and warm tones of un-lacquered Solid Brass, richly veined red and black timbers, and effortlessly classical un-polished Solid Bronze, From the Anvil have used old patterns and patents to resurrect beautiful old designs of hardware, and their designers have created many new flagship products inspired by vintage hardware, suited to modern architectural applications.

This article examines and explains all of the From the Anvil's Finishes. You can browse the entire From the Anvil range right here, at More Handles.

Beeswax Finish - (For Internal Use Only)

The Beeswax finish is the most authentic finish in From the Anvil's hand forged steel range. When the highly skilled blacksmiths have finished hand- forging each product the colours left in the steel range from blue to deep red ochre.

To preserve these beautiful colours and the texture from the hammer and anvil, pure beeswax is applied. This gives a subtle, matt richness to the hand made ironmongery and offers excellent protection when products are fitted internally and properly maintained.

Powder Coat Black Finish - (For Internal or External Use)

Our satin Black Finish is baked in a high-temperature oven giving it an attractive, durable and corrosion-resistant finish. This low maintenance and can be used internally or externally. It is resistant to moisture so is ideal for use in bathrooms and damp conditions.

We recommend that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time-to-time. This will remove harmful deposits and maintain the powder coat black's original condition.

Black Antique Finish - (For Internal or External Use)

The Antique Black finish is more textured than the satin powder coat black alternative. It has a more grainy texture - The main reason for this being it is cast, rather than forged. Like our powder coat black finish, this antique black finish is baked in a high temperature oven giving it a durable and corrosion resistant finish which is low maintenance.

We recommend that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time-to-time which will remove harmful deposits and maintain it in its original condition.

Pewter Patina Finish * (Suitable for Internal or External Use)

This finish is elegant and beautifully highlights the texture of the steel. The unique and complex forging process runs deep into the metal, resulting in an unmatched contrast of texture and colour. It has excellent anti-corrosion properties but we recommend that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time-to-time which will remove harmful deposits and maintain it in its original condition.

* All references to ‘Pewter’ throughout this website refers to products being finished with a ‘Pewter Patina Finish’ or ‘Antique Pewter Finish’. Please note there is a difference between Pewter and Antique Pewter.

Antique Pewter Finish* - (For Internal or External Use)

The unique Antique Pewter finish is a complicated finishing process  which is applied to a solid brass base metal. This gives unmatched excellent anti-corrosion properties. It is a close match to our Pewter Patina finish but has a smoother, less 'hand forged' feel. We recommend that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time-to-time - this will remove harmful deposits and maintain it in its original condition.

Applied Bronze Finish - (Suitable for Internal or External Use)

The From the Anvil Bronze finish is coated with onto forged Steel. The Bronze finish is applied and very durable - It will always look at its best for years to come and is completely weatherproof. This finish is elegant and beautifully highlights the rustic and distinctive qualities of the handforging process.

It has excellent anti-corrosion properties but we recommend that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time-to-time which will remove harmful deposits and maintain it in its original condition.

Aged Solid Bronze Finish - (For Internal or External Use)

All of the From the Anvil Aged Bronze products are manufactured from genuine, unpolished solid bronze. Overtime and through use the solid bronze will slowly lighten in colour resulting in a beautiful subtle patine appearance, reminiscent of classical architectural fittings and statues.

Unlacquered Polished Brass Finish - (For Internal or External Use)

All of the From the Anvil Polished Brass products are manufactured to the highest standards and come un-lacquered for authenticity and to retain the original finish. Regular polishing with a good quality metal polish is essential. However, if the intention is to allow the surface to age through oxidization, no attention needs to be given. Over time the brass will acquire a darker and classic rose-gold aged patina.

Antique Brass Finish - (For Internal or External Use)

This finish has been treated to speed up the natural tarnishing process which produces the  beautiful antique feel of this finish. It is burnished making it smooth in appearance and is used as an alternative finish where a highly polished surface is not desired. The finish is un-lacquered, will tarnish naturally causing the aged patina to darken with time. A semi gloss finish can be achieved through polishing by using Brasso.

Aged Brass Finish - (For Internal or External Use)

Similar to the Antique Brass finish, but subtly less dark. To achieve the Aged Brass Finish we accelerate the ageing process of the un-lacquered brass, except then the finish is re-polished. The result is a beautiful product which hightlights any dark detail on the product. To retain the original finish, regular polishing with a good quality metal polish is essential. However, if the intention is to allow the surface to age through oxidization, no attention needs to be given. Over time the brass will acquire a darker and more aged patina.

Iron Finish - (For Internal or External Use)

These products are made from Solid Iron & exhibit the natural beauty and texture of the metal. It is cast and dressed and finished with a clear powder coating to protect the iron from weather and moisture, this also gives it a rich colour..

We recommend that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time-to-time which will remove harmful deposits and maintain it in its original condition.

Natural Smooth Finish - (For Internal Use Only)

A natural cast iron, finished with a clear matt lacquer which produces a beautifully smooth look and feel with subtle highlights from the base metal. Is only intended for internal use. If fitted externally i.e in an enclosed porch/bathroom it will need to be treated with Maintenance Wax periodically.

We recommend that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time-to-time which will remove harmful deposits and maintain it in its original condition.

Natural Textured Finish - (For Internal Use Only)

A natural cast iron, finished with a clear matt lacquer which produces a beautifully textured look and feel.

Polished Chrome Finish - (For Internal or External Use)

A bright, highly polished finished which reflects like a mirror. A base metal of either solid brass or steel, which then has a quality chrome plating process applied to it’s surface to give a highly polished and beautiful finish. We recommend that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time-to-time which will remove harmful deposits and maintain it in its original condition.

Satin Chrome Finish - (For Internal or External Use)

A highly polished finished which is brushed with a unidirectional finish to give the satin look. Created from a base metal of either solid brass or steel which then has a quality chrome plating process applied to it’s surface.

We recommend that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time-to-time which will remove harmful deposits and maintain it in its original condition.

Brushed Satin Chrome Finish - (For Internal or External Use)

A highly polished finished which has a brushed effect running down the product finish to give the brushed and satin look. A base metal of either solid brass or steel which then has a quality chrome plating process applied to it’s surface to give a highly desirable finish.

We recommend that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time-to-time which will remove harmful deposits and maintain it in its original condition.

Polished Nickel Finish - (For Internal or External Use)

A highly polished finish with a nickel plating applied to a quality solid brass substrate. Polished Nickel is similar to the polished chrome finish, but with a slightly warmer tone. The polished Nickel finish has become popular with handmade kitchen makers and interior designers for it's contemporary yet mellow colour. This is an unlaquered finish, and as such, basically maintenence free - because nickel will not tarnish.

We still recommend that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time-to-time which will remove harmful deposits and maintain it in its original condition.

Ebony Finish - (For Internal or External Use)

Our Ebonised products have a rich, dark look and feel, and impart a very distinctive quality. The material is solid hardwood which has a very high density and fine texture - Imparting a very smooth finish. It is then ebonised with quality dye, as has been used for centuries. The finish can be polished or waxed to maintain the vibrance of the wood and to give overall protection.

Designed to be used internally but can also be used externally if maintained with Anvil wax & wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time-to-time which will remove harmful deposits.

Rosewood Finish - (For Internal or External Use)

Our Rosewood products are strong and heavy with a richly hued reddish colour and much darker veining. Can be polished or waxed to maintain the vibrancy of the wood and to give overall protection.

Designed to be used internally but can also be used externally if maintained with Anvil wax.

Although the above handles are suitable for external use we would advise against external for coastal regions.
