BS EN Standards are the industry benchmark for product performance in all major product areas in architectural hardware.

Each standard defines a set of tests for products to ensure that they conform to the industry requirements ensuring peace of mind for the architect, specifier, builder and end-user.

The defined test and product evaluation produce a multi-digit classification code which allows users to easily compare products and ensure they choose the right product for the application.

The relevant BS EN standards for Overhead Door Closers are summarised below;

BS EN 1154  - is the European standard for 'Controlled Door Closing Devices'. The standard measures mechanical door closer performance resulting in a 6 digit classification.

BS EN 1155 is a parallel standard for 'Electrically Powered Hold-open Devices' and is therefore relevant to Electromagnetic door closers. Such closers must satisfy the requirements of both standards, BS EN 1154 and BS EN 1155. BS EN 1154 and BS EN 1155 are both harmonised standards and CE marking became mandatory in 2004

BS Classifications | Door closer sizes and Classifications | More Handles hot to guide

Digit 1- Category of Use (Grades 3 to 4) (Grade 3)
Defines the angle from which it will close the door

Digit 2 - Durability (Grade 8 only) (Grades 5 to 8)
Grade 8 describes 500,000 test cycles for both standards but is the only grade available in BS EN 1154

Digit 3 - Door Mass (Grades 1 to 7) (Grades 3 to 7)
Identifies the closing power of the closer by max. door width and weight (see chart below)

Digit 4 - Fire Resistance (Grade 0 or 1) (Grade 1)
Grade 0 is not suitable for fire door applications. Grade 1 must be supported by fire tests to BS EN 1634

Digit 5 - Safety (Grade 1 only)
Grade 1 identifies the closer is hazard-free

Digit 6 - Corrosion Resistance (Grade 0 to 4)

Fire Testing

Individual products are not in themselves fire tested, but are included as an integral part of a fire test carried out on a timber or steel fire door. As a consequence, the details of the test, the construction of the door, the inclusion of intumescent material etc must be considered when specifying products suitable for use on a fire door. Where More Handles products are indicated as suitable for fire door applications, the products have been successfully included on a test door which has achieved the stated rating. More Handles can provide comprehensive test certification for all appropriate products and these are available on request.
