From The Anvil Finishes

From the Anvil built their reputation as the UK’s leading manufacturer of hand-forged ironmongery, set apart from their competitors in that each piece is individually created by hand on an anvil, from malleable iron or steel. Their finishing processes have always been ahead of the game, and From the Anvil traditionally focused on the three finishes of the very traditional Beeswax, durable Black Powder Coat, and the beautiful varying tones of Pewter Patina.

Having cemented their reputation as the UK’s most authentic ironmongery makers, the ever-innovative designers at From the Anvil turned their attention to the development of other products and finishes, which would lead them to expand on their traditional customer-base of cottages and country homes. From the Anvil set out to create a collection of door handles and hardware which would be at home in a variety of period houses - from Victorian villas to stately homes.

From the outset, the designers at From the Anvil knew they would need a new palette of finishes to work with to create their new collection, so they dug into the architectural past for inspiration on new finishes and patterns to introduce under their new collection.

The age-old material of Solid Brass was an obvious starting point. For too long, the architectural ironmongery industry had been dominated by brass treated with lacquer coatings, and plated or varnished finishes. This can often make for a quite garish final result, and From the Anvil set about remedying this with three brand new, truly authentic finishes for solid brass. These finishes are designed especially to augment the natural beauty of the Brass base metal, rather than obscure it with lacquer coatings or plating.

Firstly, Unlacquered Polished Brass Finish is the most simple of the From the Anvil brass-based products – un-lacquered Polished Brass products are manufactured to the highest standards and come un-lacquered for maximum authenticity. This finish will begin to oxidize over time, but can be maintained through regular polishing with a good quality metal polish (such as Brasso.) However, if the intention is to allow the surface to age through oxidization, the product may be left to age gracefully itself, and needs to be given. Over time the brass will acquire a darker and classic rose-gold aged patina.

Antique Brass Finish has been treated to speed up the natural aging and oxidizing process. This produces the beautiful antique appearance displayed by this finish. The Antique Brass finish is burnished, imparting a smooth in feeling and appearance. Antique Brass is a truly authentic finish, and looks as though it has been in place for many years. The finish is un-lacquered, so will continue to age naturally, and the aged patina to darken with time. It may be either left to age or maintained with Brasso.

Aged Brass Finish is very similar to the Antique Brass finish, but subtly less dark. To achieve the Aged Brass Finish, the ageing process is accelerated much like the Antique Brass, except then the finish is re-polished. The result is a beautiful rose-gold finish, which highlights any dark detail on the product. The finish may maintained with Brasso, or left to age gracefully to its own unique patina.

Aged Solid Bronze Finish products are manufactured from genuine, unpolished solid bronze. Over time and through use the solid bronze will slowly lighten in colour resulting in a beautiful subtle patine appearance, reminiscent of classical architectural fittings and statues. No attention needs to be given to this classical material, as the finish quite literally is the natural beauty of the solid Bronze base metal.

Polished Nickel Finish is a highly polished finish with nickel plating applied to a quality solid brass substrate. Polished Nickel is similar to the polished chrome finish, only with a slightly warmer tone than the bright, cold, effect of chrome. Polished Nickel was largely lost for many years, but has recently made resurgence into interior design. The polished Nickel finish has become popular with handmade kitchen makers and interior designers for it's contemporary yet mellow colour, which complements raw timber, especially oak, extremely well. This is an un-lacquered finish, and as such, basically maintenance free, because nickel will not tarnish.

Ebony Finish items have a rich, dark look and feel, and impart a very distinctive quality. The material is solid hardwood, which has a very high density and fine texture - Imparting a very smooth finish. It is then ebonised with quality dye, as has been used for centuries. The finish can be polished or waxed to maintain the vibrancy of the timber. The ebony finish is frequently matched with Un-lacquered brass or polished nickel, and it complements both beautifully.

Rosewood Finish products are strong and heavy with a richly hued reddish colour, picked out by much darker veining. The From the Anvil Rosewood can be polished or waxed to maintain the vibrancy of the wood and to give overall protection. The Rosewood timber is frequently matched with Un-lacquered brass or polished nickel.
